HARRIS COUNTY Crime Analyst III in Houston, Texas

Position Description

Harris County Sheriff's Office the largest sheriff's office in Texas and the third largest in the Nation is seeking a dynamic and experienced Crime Analyst for our Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). Under general supervision, the Crime Analyst creates and provides residual analytical work products for ongoing criminal investigations, strategic planning and administrative purposes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs tactical analysis involved in the recognition and identification of series related crimes including burglaries, motor vehicle thefts and robberies
  • Gathers, analyzes and validates information from various sources, such as law enforcement databases, and prepare comprehensive written reports, presentations, maps, or charts based on research, collection, and analysis of intelligence data
  • Collaborates with representatives from other government and intelligence organizations, shares information such as statistical data and/or coordinates intelligence activities
  • Monitors and studies activities relating to narcotics, money laundering, gangs, auto theft rings, terrorism, or other national security threats
  • Evaluates records of communications to identify plot activity and determine the size and location of criminal groups and members
  • Performs other assignments and duties as assigned Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Computer Science, Math or closely related field, along with two (2) years of recent work experience in crime/intelligence analysis for local, regional, or national law enforcement or military intelligence agency; *OR*

  • Criminal Intelligence Analyst Certification and four (4) years work experience in crime/intelligence analysis for local, regional, or national law enforcement or military intelligence agency

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of Crime Analysis within the military or law enforcement agency
  • Knowledge of computer data systems, statistical analysis, and mapping software programs Knowledge of principles of statistics and quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, demographic and social variables affecting public safety
  • Strong research, methodology, data collection, analysis and reporting skills
  • Strong quantitative and communication skills – both written and verbal with attention to detail
  • Ability to design, use, and maintain databases and software applications, such as geographic information systems (GIS) mapping and artificial intelligence tools
  • Ability to utilize a variety of data bases and computer programs to generate maps, hotspots, reports and statistical and tactical information
  • Ability to mentor and train new analysts on analytical techniques and agency policies and procedures
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking skills, inductive reasoning, and deductive reasoning to identify gaps in information and recommendations, assess source and information reliability and validity
  • Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce meaningful and accurate solutions, and apply various analytical techniques
  • Available to work evening or night shift, overtime and/or varying duty hours as deemed necessary
